Preface
Working problems will be the "secret of success" for most of you who are enrolled in an organic chemistry course. By working problems, you will be able to test your understanding of the information presented in lectures and the textbook. After you work a problem or group of problems, having additional input from other students, your instructor, or from a written source is generally desirable, and this book is intended to serve you in that capacity.
The chapters which introduce the major types of compounds (the major functional groups) contain:
1. learning objectives
2. answers to problems
3. reaction summary
4. reaction review exercises
Learning objectives outline the topics of each chapter,, and each objective is correlated with the appropriate questions in the text. The reactions of each chapter are presented in general form in' the reaction summary. Reaction review exercises are also found in most chapters. These are presented in a question and answer format and are generally divided into two parts. In part A, only the reactions of the chapter are considered. Part B also reviews reactions from previous chapters.
